At the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), thousands of kids find support through mentors, coaches, and officers who show up for them every day. One of those mentors is Shanty. Shanty first picked up a tennis racket when she was five years old. Tennis became her escape and the place where she learned resilience, discipline, and confidence through some very difficult moments in her life.
Today, she shares those same lessons with Detroit PAL kids. Through PAL’s Tiny Tennis program, Shanty has helped dozens of Detroit kids discover the game, build confidence, and feel like they belong. Because when a caring adult shows up consistently, kids begin to believe in themselves.
Today, you can help make sure more Detroit kids have someone who shows up for them. Here’s how your gift can make a difference:
Helps introduce a Detroit child to PAL programs where encouragement and mentorship begin.
Helps provide uniforms so PAL kids can step onto the field feeling confident and ready to belong.
Helps train and support the mentors, coaches, and officers who show up for PAL kids every day.
Helps provide the equipment, space, and support that keep PAL programs running for Detroit youth.
Supports multiple kids across PAL programs, ensuring more youth have safe places to play and learn.
Helps support an entire PAL team experience, providing mentorship, coaching, and positive opportunities for Detroit youth.

I know what it feels like to need someone who believes in you.
Now I get to be that person for them.”
