At the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), thousands of kids find support through mentors, coaches, and officers who show up for them every day. One of those mentors is Shanty. Shanty first picked up a tennis racket when she was five years old. Tennis became her escape and the place where she learned resilience, discipline, and confidence through some very difficult moments in her life.

Today, she shares those same lessons with Detroit PAL kids. Through PAL’s Tiny Tennis program, Shanty has helped dozens of Detroit kids discover the game, build confidence, and feel like they belong. Because when a caring adult shows up consistently, kids begin to believe in themselves.
